Low Initial Cost versus Long-term Dependability
Let's start by discussing some of the key differences in the physical makeup of the two printers. First, the HDP5000 is offered as one basic model (not including the name change by adding the laminator, or the one created specifically for the financial market), while the XID5xxie is available in 4 distinct models with different feature sets at different price levels that are upgradeable from any lower model to a higher one. The XID560ie is an entry-level single-side retransfer printer that includes options for single-side lamination, and magnetic stripe, contact chip and contactless encoding, plus USB/Ethernet connectivity. The XID570ie offers the same features, but with dual-side capacity. The XID580ie, the true workhorse model of the family, includes these same options, plus image quality enhancement, faster print speeds, and unique ribbon solutions. The XID590ie is identical to the 580ie, plus includes Advanced Intelligent Printer Management, which provides the ability to connect, group and track jobs on up to 7 printers connected to the same workstation. This allows you to purchase only what you need today, while giving you the options you want to grow your system tomorrow.

1 HDP model available versus 4 distinct and scalable XID models
The HDP5000 is more than 90% plastic, from its frame to its shell, to its key interior components. This was necessary to drive the cost down to compete with the Direct Card printing market that has dominated the ID industry for the last 15 years. This makes it cheaper and lighter of course than other retransfer printers in the market, but that also makes it less durable than the XID with it's steel frame and cover. Also, much of an XID's key components are designed with metal screws, brackets and clips to maintain durability over its lifetime of hundreds of thousands of prints. The RoHS-compliant printer system is designed to be an extremely long-lasting and environmentally safe investment. Also, the XID5xx series was the first retransfer printer listed on the GSA Approved Products List for FIPS 201 PIV card projects, being listed in August of 2006. The HDP5000 was finally listed as approved in August of 2008. The newer XID5xxie model was also approved and listed on the GSA APL in November of 2008.

Some other key differences between the HDP5000 and the XID family of printers include print speeds, media size and capacity, cleaning systems, material options, user interfaces, warranties and printer reputations. To go into more detail showing how the XID family of retransfer printers is superior to the Fargo HDP5000, and how these major differences can affect your ID card production, continue here.
